Duel Calibre Interview (Broke)

1). So what are your real names, and how old are you both?
Jimmy and Shane , both 23.
(2). Where are you from?
Luton.
(3). How did you both meet?
We met through high school and became good friends in the final year and have been ever since.
(4). When did you start producing? And what style were you making at the time?
J: I started producing when I was 17 just playing around with Fruity Loops. I started out making dnb, well that’s the closest genre to whatever the hell it sounded like.
S: I started producing when I was 16 I went to St Albans College to study music tech. I started out making hip hop. I’ve always been into song writing and playing instruments from a young age.
(5). How long have you been into breaks, and what got you into it?
Probably about 2 years. Our friend showed us a hardcore beats mix CD and a Plump Djs album. We were quite taken by the style and then heard Apocalypse and Flesh Eater which are epic tracks ! About half a year later we started messing around with our first breaks track.
(6). What breaks artists have you been inspired by?
Autobots, Breakfastaz, Far Too Loud, Freestylers, Control Z, General Midi Plump Djs, Prodigy, Rogue Element, Screwface to mention a few.
(7). Have you, or do you have any plans to do any collaborations?
Nothing at the moment, were trying to establish our own sound. There will be time for that in the future.
(8). Is there anyone in particular that you'd like to make a tune with?
J: Noisa, because they’re just plain sick!
S: Yeah man! Screwface and Breakfastaz would be cool.
(9). As for producing, tell us a little bit about your setup. What hardware and software are you using, and what are your reasons for using them?
We have a small studio with a G5 running Logic 7 with various soft synths and tools. Logic 7 is the shit. It has everything we need with no complaints. We use a Hercules fw16 hooked up to Fostex PM2 monitors and a Rhode Nt1a mic. We don’t have any hardware, don’t have any hardware, its so expensive and space consuming. A few hardware compressors and other units would be sweet though.
(10.) Do you have any production tips that you wish someone had told you when you started out.
Just listen to the track after a break or a night’s sleep. Sometimes it can sound like an 8 year old dog on ketamin produced it. So don’t get too excited at first.
(11). What events have you played? And what has been your best to date.
Bristol (Break) twice, Southampton (Fraction) and our close friend who runs a night in Luton called Relief (myspace/relief_events) a number of times. We have been to Spain 3 times so far. The best times have been Spain, because the crowd are nuts!
(Your bound to say Spain) Sooo...)
(12). Why do you think the Spanish go so loco about your sound?
We think the sound just suits them. They love the breakdowns and build-ups. It’s a coincidence that we produce in this way. The Spanish were going mental over our first releases and we didn’t know for ages.
(13). What events have you got in the pipeline
We have Relief – August 25th in Luton. Then Romania, Monday Club in St Albans in September, Relief twice in October in Audio in Brighton. We should be going on an American tour soon, we may also be out there in August and September.
(14). Tell us your views on the UK breakbeat scene at present.
J: It’s not big enough. Not enough people know what breakbeat is.
S: The dance scene is dominated by electro and minimal at the moment, but tearout will have its day!
(15). Have you played any radio stations?
Not yet, well we had a special guest mix on the Specimen A show and should have a guest mix on Ctrl Z or Breakfastaz show soon.
(16). Have you got a myspace, a website or both?
We have a myspace which is www.myspace.com/duelcalibre
(17). Whats that messed up video on your myspace, and who's the crazy passenger?
J: Lol that’s me with Shanes granddad in his car. He is a crazy mofo, im trying to pull as many faces as I can with out him seeing, whilst putting on his accent. I always try and wind him up. If you met him you would understand why.
(18). What tracks have you released so far?
Devil in flight/ Severe Trauma (Oct 06), Wavin the 4Four (Nov 06), Sensi/ Upperkut (Mar 07)
(19). What's been the best selling track out of these, and what do you feel is the best track you've made?
S: Sensi is the best selling track. I think Ours to Own (our latest track). I think we improve with every track we make.
(20). What record label are you signed to?
Brock Out / Broke. The Autobot’s Label
(21). Have you got any forthcoming releases planned?
"Ours to Own" due out in September on Broke. It’s going to be part of the Broke LP "The Ends of the Earth" featuring The Autobots, Screwface, Agent Alvin & Dunsta, General Midi, Duel Calibre, Antiform Unbalanced Jack, Affinity and more very special guests!
(22). Looking at the bigger picture, have you got any plans for the future?
J: Getting married, JOKE ! Were releasing an album early next year and hopefully going on a tour in the US. We want to release some tracks in other genres, obtain more gigs and just build a solid name for ourselves.
(23). Is there anything else you'd like to say?
J: Thanks for the opportunity to do this, all the best.
S: Good luck and BIG UP Switch Fm !!
