Interview with The Breakfastaz
In January 2004 platinum breaks were the first
to interview the Breakfastaz and no one would have believed how well they have
done on the breaks scene in just one year and looking back on that interview we
thought we better update it and see how the boyz were coping with the stardom
life of breaks.
Who are the
Breakfastaz?
G Swing, DJ Froe and DJ Murphy
When did u form the Breakfastaz?
The first
breakbeat thing we did came out February2003 and the name emerged soon after.
What and when was the first tune you
ever produced together?
We have been producing for years, we did a
lot of garage stuff and hip hop tunes which we been doing for about 4 years but
the first breakbeat track was Dragon and Forever Lost.
How many records have you made since then?
Quite a few, the singles we done since then are Beer Guzzler, Psychopath,
Free full and this way and the Big Breakfast series which is 6 tracks on
Cyberfunk records plus remixes like the Distortionz one Can of worms, Kick it
& Green Light on Mob, The Pressure on Passenger, Midnight and lift me up on
Against The Grain, Hard Knox, Free The Beast on Rat Records, Get Down Remix and
Bow Down remix for Split Loop.
This year
you won the best breakthrough act at breaks poll, were you expecting
that?
Yeh we won the best breakthrough act and we were nominees for
best producer as well so that was nice, we weren’t really expecting to win, we
had a good year and we definitely noticed that we were playing out more and
getting a bit more press and stuff but there were some good people up for it so
we didn’t know till we got it really.
Tell us a bit about the Breaks Poll Album.
We are doing the first in a series for the Breaks Poll albums which are
coming out on Super Charged and that’s coming out on the 15th September with a
whole load of tracks by us, Pendulum, Atomic Hooligan, Freestylers and loads of
others.
What record label are you
currently signed to?
Against The Grain
What other artists have you worked along side in the
studio?
We’ve done a collaboration with Aquasky for there forth
coming collaboration album.
What
countries have the Braekfastaz played in and are there any you still want to
play in?
This year we have done quite a few we have done USA and
Canada, done Australia, done Spain, done Turkey, Italy, Hungary, Belgium, China
and all over the UK, there are still places we want to play like Asia and Japan
and Hong Kong and Germany is coming along but we have been lucky to cover quite
a lot of places this year.
Do you play
on radio and if so where and when?
Every Friday 3 till 9 pm GMT on www.pyrotechnicradio.com and Breaks fm is every fortnight on a
Sunday from 6-8 pm GMT plus we do a lot of guest shows like Freeze fm and Kiss
FM.
What are your opinions on the
Breakbeat scene at the mo?
Its pretty healthy there is a lot of music
coming out, there hasn’t been many break trough acts this year there has been a
few like Rouge Element and Control Z have had a really good year, it would be
nice to see a few more good artists getting pushed a bit more besides that there
are a lot of good club nights going on and its continually spreading world wide
so that’s good.
When did you first get
in to breakbeat?
We been into it for years when we were into Garage
we picked up on some of the more cross over stuff, we always played the early
Rat records stuff, like Deekline, Wesley J and Shimarno, DJ Zinc and Hardcore
beats early Distortionz stuff that sort of thing.
What do you think the future holds for the breakbeat
scene?
Hopefully it would be nice to see it rise up in the UK, its all
about the young people getting into the bass line stuff, the Housey stuff is not
for them, it’s for people who are board of house.
Last year you were knocking out tracks left right and
centre how come you have slowed down this year?
It’s a couple of
things like the djing thing especially after we won the breaks poll award we got
so busy djing that you just end up touring everywhere and when you play out
every weekend and get mash up we are not back to normal till like Tuesday and
then the weekends here again, we are trying to calm it down a bit and spend more
time in the studio plus we have been doing a lot of non breaks stuff as well but
we are getting back on it now.
What’s
the best event you have ever played?
We have played a lot this year,
one of the highlights was a club called Craatchoe in Spain about 3000 people the
club had an electronic retracting roof which was cool, we had a good few gigs at
Fabric which we play every month.
What
are your plans for the future?
We are going back into the studio now
a lot more and we are trying to cut down on the remixes a bit, getting a few new
singles out and getting some tracks together for the album.
